16 Orrs Court is the preeminent example of a carefully restored Freedman's Cottage,(1Bedroom, 1Sleeping Loft & 1Bath) retaining all integrity while adapting the interior for the 21st century. Built post Civil War, the architecture follows the traditional one-room wide structure with two mirrored adjoining fireplaces. The original plaster walls were preserved, as well as the beaded board walls, and the highly sought after beautiful heart of pine floors. Additionally, it has an added loft, a South facing piazza, and the classic gable roof of the Freedman's Cottage style. Described by architectural historians as a subset of the Charleston single-house, the Freedman's Cottage reflects a building style that considered local needs and traditions.
